Are You Looking Too Hard For Work
In an earlier blog, the issue was whether your daily activities indicate that you are really looking for work. And now I see signs that you may be looking too hard for work. The signs are:
-
You apply for work that you would leave immediately if something better came along. And I should not think too harshly of you for doing this because there is always something better out there but do you have the patience or resources to wait until it comes along? There is an exception to applying for work that you would leave immediately - your employer is aware that your present work situation is only until something better came along.
-
You apply for work that you have no intention of accepting. Usually you think that you have no chance of getting another job unless you apply for everything. Re-think that strategy. The potential employer who reviews your credentials is asking “why did you apply for this job?”
-
You apply for work only because the pay or benefits or the location is attractive. And, usually you can not articulate any reason to work for the employer except pay, benefits, or location. The employer is looking for how you will contribute to their success. Just know that you are not considered further because your motive is self-serving.
-
You apply for work knowing that you have no skills for the work being offerred. Learning new skills is great and even better if the employer provides the training. Of course, every job will require some orientation. Remember, usually orientation is not skill training.
These are signs of looking too hard that I see daily. And still, no magic formula to finding your next work opportunity. But if you are doing any of the mentioned signs, examine whether you are looking too hard for work. And here is the good news - you may ignore everything written here and still find the work of your dreams. Happy hunting!
