Should You Visit Potential Employer

Answer to “should a potential employee make an unanounced visit to a potential employer?” is not a simple yes or no. You can have confidence that as soon as the hiring manager sees you and your qualifications, your eventual hire is certain. There is major thing you need to know. Many employers are not easily accessible by the general public. And if you happen upon their location, you should have proper ID and a good reason for being their location.

Visiting a potential employer is one tactic that you should give some attention beforehand. It is critical that you spend some time with your favorite search engine. Hopefully, your search engine results will provide some valuable information about:

  1. What products or services are offerred by the employer. You will never impress them if you do not know this information.

  2. Is the employer seeking new workers, and if so, for what type of work. You are in a better position to have the ear of the employer if you know what they are seeking and you do fit with at least one of the needs.

  3. What is the employer's normal application process. And will the employer accept an unsolicited resume or application. Not having a clue about the process can cause an embarrassing situation for you. Remember any one who does not follow the process can cause great harm to the employer.

  4. Any topics that indicates the near-future focus of the employer. You would like to be part of their future?

  5. Pending activities especially mergers, acquisitions, or divestitures. Pay attention to these and you find that opportunities abound or may be disappearing.

Once you have a some insight from the internet, you may decide that an email or hand written note might get you more favorable attention.

Now, if you still want to visit, do not be discouraged if the staff is too busy, and no one will see you. Be prepared for whatever happens doing your visit. Do not take any thing that you hear literally. Everybody says that some-one will call you by a certain time. If that call never comes, you follow-up after a reasonable time.

Sometimes finding work is like a courting ritual. Hopefully, you and your prospective employer have a great first date. If so, the employer will ask you for a second date. If not, you are better prepared to set your next date.
