How The Internet Has Changed The Job Search Process

When I started working full time in staffing approximately 17 years ago, job seekers would walk in to our office and complete a application on the spot. Fast forward to the year 2011 and everything is done over the internet. The internet has made it quicker and easier for us to fill positions then ever before. As a job seeker, it forces you to embrace technology with open arms.

Here are my top 3 tips to job seekers when applying over the internet for employment:

  • Read the job description and instructions carefully. Make sure your skills and experience match what the prospective employer requires. Make sure you have include all of the requirements (application, resume, references, writing samples, portfolio) needed to apply for the position.
  • Proofread. Make sure you use spell check and proofread. This includes your phone number and email address. A simple typo may disqualify you.
  • Return calls and emails from the prospective employer in a timely fashion. Respond to inquiries within 24 hours or less.
